Comparison
Mac Studio vs DGX Spark vs a graphics-card tower for office AI
For an office where many people ask one machine, two numbers decide everything: how much memory it has (what model fits, how many people at once) and how fast that memory is (how fast answers appear). Here is how the three compare, and why we implement Mac Studios.
The numbers
| Compared on | Mac Studio M5 Max | Mac Studio M5 Ultra | NVIDIA DGX Spark | Tower with an RTX PRO 6000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI memory | 128 GB | 256 GB or 512 GB | 128 GB (or 64 GB) | 96 GB per card |
| Memory speed | 614 GB/s | 1.2 TB/s | 273 GB/s | 1,792 GB/s |
| Price | $4,799 | $9,499 (256 GB); 512 GB not yet priced | $6,950 ($4,999 for 64 GB) | Our Apex Pro tower: $23,499 |
| Size and noise | Small, near silent | Small, near silent | Small | Full tower with heavy cooling |
| Best for | Offices of 2–10 people | Offices of 10 to 60+ | One developer working with NVIDIA's software | One power user who wants the fastest single card |

Why memory speed matters so much
Every word a model writes means reading the active part of the model out of memory once, so words per second is roughly memory speed divided by that part. At 1.2 TB/s the M5 Ultra moves memory more than four times as fast as a DGX Spark at 273 GB/s. That is the difference between a 320B-class model answering at reading speed and a smaller model making a room of people wait.
DGX Spark: a developer's machine
The Spark puts 128 GB and NVIDIA's software stack in a box that fits on a desk, which makes it a fine machine for one developer building on NVIDIA's tools. For an office, its 273 GB/s memory is the bottleneck: big models fit but answer slowly, and slower still when several people ask at once. We do not sell Sparks.
A graphics-card tower: fastest per card, hard to scale
One RTX PRO 6000 card moves memory at 1,792 GB/s, faster than anything here, but holds 96 GB. Reaching the 256 GB the Office level needs takes three cards: a loud, hot, multi-card server. We build towers for one person; for an office, the Mac does the same job silently on a shelf.
Why we implement Mac Studios
The Mac Studio is the quietest way to get a lot of fast memory in one box: up to 512 GB at 1.2 TB/s on the M5 Ultra. It sits silently on a shelf, and your IT provider already knows how to look after a Mac. We sell it at Apple's list price and earn the implementation and the management plan.
Questions we get asked
Is a DGX Spark good for running AI for a small office?
+
It holds big models in its 128 GB, but at 273 GB/s it answers them slowly, and more slowly when several people ask at once. For an office we recommend a Mac Studio: the M5 Max moves memory at 614 GB/s and the M5 Ultra at 1.2 TB/s.
Which Mac Studio do I need?
+
For 2 to 10 people, the M5 Max with 128 GB ($4,799). For 10 to 40 people or long documents, the M5 Ultra with 256 GB ($9,499). For 40 or more, the 512 GB M5 Ultra once Apple prices it. The levels guide explains what each step unlocks.
